An Introduction To Transformers

By Scott Rodgers

Have you ever thought of, what is a box type device installed in almost every house hold appliances? Well, that is a transformer used to couple electric energy from one circuit to another with the use of inductively coupled capacitors. Common areas where transformers are used can be like TV, ceiling fans and your electric motor that is used to fill up the overhead tank.

The working principle of the device is mutual inductance. The phenomenon says that when a current carrying conductor is forced to vary its current, it produces a varying magnetic field in it. Therefore, a current of same value is then induced into the coil that is placed near to the conductor. And so, these two coils are known as primary winding and secondary winding respectively.

Transformer is an electrical device and has many areas of application. When electrical energy is transmitted on wires over long distances, it is first transformed into suitable form through transformers. Electrical energy or electricity has to pass through a series of transformers before it reaches to the consumer.

While, the electricity that is used in residential areas is stepped down using a step down transformer, step up transformers are used in big companies and firms where a power is needed.

Appliances such as washing machines, dishwashers, cell phones use transformers for their effective working. Not only this, two way conversation is possible on your single cable telephone set is mainly due to transformer.

Microphones and record players use signal and audio transformers to couple different stages of amplifiers.

Besides, this electrical device is very advantageous in day to day electrical circuitry. Transformer core, coils, capacitors, inductors, oil tank etc are some of the parts of a transformer which are not very expensive. Thus, the device is not that costly. Transformers that consists of only one winding are also available. Such type of transformers are termed as auto transformers. These are the least expensive one since, these have only one winding.

The device offers faster switching time and lower cross- over losses and have very high efficiency. These are able to deliver high- quality power effectively. - 29939
