What is Your Carbon Footprint?

By Jerry Dyess

The amount of carbon dioxide that each person produces year is mind blowing; just in the USA 15,000 pounds yearly is the average. This includes the carbon dioxide generated as the services or products we buy are made, the fuel use in work and play, the energy volume it takes in the homes. This number can be reduced and even done aways with through having a more carbon neutral lifestyle. Lessening the carbon footprint puts Texas closer to using clean energy resources.

Texans could begin lessening the carbon footprint through more efficient energy use. This entails people living their life while using lower amounts of energy. Some ways to go about this:

Switching to energy efficient appliances and light bulbs. Energy efficient light bulbs can save over 100 pounds of carbon dioxide in a year's time.

Reducing the amount of hot water used. People can invest in efficient on demand hot water heaters, low flow shower heads and wash clothes in cold water. This reduces the carbon dioxide load by over 300 pounds.

Recycling reduces carbon dioxide waste by 2,500 pounds. Start a recycling program if one is not available.

Trees do help lower carbon dioxide that is present in atmosphere so plant more of them, for every tree plant about a ton of carbon dioxide is reduced. The trees do more than just take in carbon dioxide, they also shade the buildings from the sun to make them cooler, and blocks the wind for the winter months.

Another way of achieving the objective of cleaner Texas energy resources includes changing to a renewable type of energy as in the wind power or solar power. Texas and the oil industry have always been thought of together. The state is starting to explore new sources of energy since the supply in fossil fuels is dwindling so much that since'72 Texas' oil production has decreased by 73%. Texas has enough clean and renewable energy resources, that can supply more than the sustainable energy that the fossil fuels supplied. This possibility for the clean energy for Texas is based around the geothermal, solar power, biomass, and wind renewable energy resources.

Wind power is known to be sustainable and very effective cost wise for a good Texas energy resource that is clean too. Texas is capable of producing a great enough quantity of wind power that they can be totally independent. Then the overflow from all of this could be sold to close by regions.

Texas is situated just right for solar power. The long, nice, sunny days make it easy to collect the solar energy. Rewards are reaped from whatever the investment it takes to do this.

With fossil oil reserves diminishing, Texas has many wells that are abandoned. These can be refitted for geothermal energy production. This is just another way to move closer to cleaner Texas energy and away from the use of fossil fuel.

Waste given off from landfills and agricultural processes can be converted into biomass energy. Numerous vehicles in various of the Texas cities and towns are powered by biodiesel in the fight to reduce the city's or town's carbon footprint.

Buying types of green power through city, government, or individual level will encourage the utilization of cleaner Texas energy forms. Texans can help this endeavor through building their own smaller units good for their homes or businesses. For solar and wind power projects the materials can be bought without much expense. Investments can be made by people to the companies the research, sell, and manufacture materials pertinent to cleaner energy. - 29939
